Wherever we turn, Ethiopian music is everywhere, whether it’s singer Mahmoud Ahmed, king of Ethio-Jazz Mulatu Astatke, or the various mutant and hybrid projects of recent years, such as Ukandanz and Getatchew Mekuria & The Ex, all of whom have passed through Druga Godba’s hands at some point.

On this occasion, the Druga Godba and Lent festivals have joined forces for a steamy Friday night event and engaged the services of one of the most intense live acts of the present moment. The KUTU project was born in Addis Ababa after the brilliant French jazz violinist Théo Ceccaldi recognised the symbiotic potential of Ethiopian rock singers Hewan Geberewold and Haleluye Tekletsadik.

What we hear is nothing less than the happy outcome of hyperactive Ethiopian nights, where on-stage energy boils over into punky violin, cosmic keyboards, hypnotic bass, propulsive percussion and some stupendous female vocals. KUTU are the sound of a young generation propelling a rich musical heritage at warp speed into super-modern global electro trance.
