Discover Free Events at the 42nd Druga Godba

The supporting programme for the 42nd Druga Godba festival contains a number of new features (Senegal Focus, for example), as well as the formats that will be familiar to festival veterans: a dance workshop, artist talks, a concert for the festival’s youngest fans and our traditional radio concert. All events in the supporting programme are free of charge and open to the public, with the exception of the Masks: A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing show at Ljubljana Puppet Theatre and the film showings at Kinodvor.

Druga godba @ Kinodvor

This year’s Druga Godba will start a couple of days before the concert programme with a fascinating event at Kinodvor, Ljubljana’s arthouse cinema. The first part of the evening will feature a documentary insight into the musical heritage(s) of West Africa in the form of the film Kora Tales. This will be followed by a discussion with Lucy Durán, the film’s co-writer and one of the world’s leading experts on West African music. After this we will take a tour of the new exhibition at the Kinodvor gallery, which will feature a visual archive showing how Druga Godba’s aesthetic and programming concerns have developed over the years.

KAi ZDAi? (What Now?)

Artificial Intelligence and the Transformation of the Music Industry

As the festival opens, we will be making some critical observations about the future of the music industry at a public round table. The discussion will focus on the increasingly marginalised position of the vast majority of artists on streaming platforms, and the vital question of the extent to which authorship is being devalued in the emerging age of AI.

Senegal Focus

A special feature of this year’s festival is a focus, as part of the supporting programme, on the rich musical traditions of Senegal. In collaboration with Zavod Exodos Ljubljana, Druga Godba will provide the occasion for the premiere of an expansive project that brings together artists from Senegal and Europe.

Thursday, 28 May
Sabar, dance workshop with Sophie ‘Sabar’

This mini-programme will kick off on Thursday with one of the most popular features of any Druga Godba supporting programme: the dance workshop. This one will be devoted to sabar, a dance and music tradition associated with the Wolof and Serer peoples of Senegal that uses traditional drums as a central means of communicating and making music. The workshop will be led by Sophie ‘Sabar’, dance anthropologist and rhythm specialist who has been researching and teaching the sabar tradition for more than two decades.

Artist talks

For years, the concert program has been enriched by a series of conversations that delve into the artistic and aesthetic ideas behind the music, reveal more personal sides of the performers, and give festival audiences the chance to engage directly with the musicians through their own questions.

Artist talk: Carola Moccia (La Niña)
Moderator: Petra Meterc

30 May, Klub CD
Artist talk: Cerys Hafana

Oflamož (za otroke gre!)

concert for children

Using a bewildering array of instruments handled more or less experimentally, Andrej Fon (Olfamož) will create a medley of songs suitable (also) for children. They’re not particularly educational, but they won’t do you any harm either. He’ll be all alone on stage, so he’s definitely going to require the services of some of the young audience, especially those with energy to burn!

Vodnikova Domačija, garden
Free entry.
