Druga Godba @Kinodvor

This year’s Druga Godba will start a couple of days before the concert programme with a fascinating event at Kinodvor, Ljubljana’s arthouse cinema. The first part of the evening will feature a documentary insight into the musical heritage(s) of West Africa in the form of the film Kora Tales. This will be followed by a discussion with Lucy Durán, the film’s co-writer and one of the world’s leading experts on West African music. After this we will take a tour of the new exhibition at the Kinodvor gallery, which will feature a visual archive showing how Druga Godba’s aesthetic and programming concerns have developed over the years.

A Malian virtuoso, Ballaké Sissoko, takes us on a musical journey through Mali, Senegal, and The Gambia, unfolding the story of the kora, a unique West African harp said by legend to have been gifted to humankind by djinns, the spirits of the African savannah.

Directed by Lucy Durán and Laurent Benhamou; screenplay by Lucy Durán and Laurent Benhamou; cinematography by Laurent Benhamou; sound by Marie-Clotilde Chéry; editing by Rémi Crépeau; produced by Corinne Serres and Samuel Thiebaut.

Tickets (screening and talk): €4

Her work focuses primarily on the music of Mali and Cuba. From 2000 to 2013, she presented the weekly programme World Routes on BBC Radio 3. Her research into Mandé music of West Africa dates back to the late 1970s.
