Although he’s been known as the Hendrix of the Desert since he started out in 2006, Vieux Farka Touré only attracted truly global attention when he teamed up with cross-genre Texans Khruangbin in 2019. The resulting album (Ali, 2022) recast eight songs by Vieux’s father Ali Farka, that most legendary of African musicians. There wasn’t much adapting to be done: if there’s one son on this planet capable of bringing his father’s legacy into the future while preserving the essence of the Malian musical tradition and adding his own personality to the mix, it’s Vieux.
In fact, we were already well-aware of this back in 2008, when he first appeared at Druga Godba. Last year also saw the release of Les Racines, his first record for the World Circuit label, which had been home to all of Ali’s albums. It’s as if things have come full circle: father and son destined to meet on the banks of the Niger and conquer the world together and forever.
