Džambo Aguševi Orchestra (MK)

Druga Godba & Festival Maribor 2021

Džambo Agušev, trumpet, vocals; Kočo Agušev, Džemal Agušev, Sunaj Mustafov, trumpet; Džafer Fazliov, Mustafa Zejnelov, Ali Zekirov, tenor horn; Šukri Dževatov, helicon; Orfej Čakalovski, davul; Redžep Nedžatov, drums

Balkan bands are among Druga Godba’s longest-standing traditions – just think of all those great performances over the years by the likes of Fejat Sejdić, Kočani and Boban Marković. And if anyone can continue that triumphant path, it’s Džambo Agušev from Strumica in North Macedonia. His orchestra won at Kumanovo way back in 2006, and followed that up five years later with a Gold Medal at Guča, the world’s most celebrated trumpet festival.

Last year’s Brasses for Masses took the music to every corner of the world, proving who’s best beyond any doubt. A fresh, playful approach, perfection of melody and rhythm, open-mindeness and a huge stage presence: you’d say that these are the attributes of all the best Roma brass ensembles. But the full-blooded passion that Džambo Aguševi share with the audience is only something we glimpse only too rarely these days.
