Neneh Cherry returning to Ljubljana

After seven years, Neneh Cherry, the iconic electro pop and hip-hop artist, is returning to Ljubljana! After performing at Križanke in 2012 with cult jazz trio The Thing, Neneh will visit us with her own band for the first time. In addition to classics such as “7 Seconds”, shell present her brand new album Broken Politics, recorded with Kieran Hebden (Four Tet).

Broken Politics is the continuation of the collaboration that began with the artists previous album Blank Project (2014). For the follow-up, Neneh Cherry and her spouse and collaborator Cameron McVey went to record the album in Woodstock, USA, where Kieran Hebden has been living these past years. There, they hired the studio of jazz pianist Karl Berger, who had played in the band of Nenehs father, renowned trumpeter and composer Don Cherry, in the 1960s. The album was thus written in a familial, friendly atmosphere, which is perhaps the reason its not as angry or hard-hitting as Blank Project, but rather calmer and more soulful, with anger, deliberation, melancholy and excitement reflecting its essence in equal parts. In addition to Four Tet, the album was produced by 3D (Massive Attack).

Neneh Cherry began her solo career in 1982, after having sung in post-punk groups The Slits and Rip Rig and Panic. She released her solo debut Raw Like Sushi, one of the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, in 1989, with the assistance of two members of Massive Attack. In turn, she provided arrangements for Massive Attacks debut Blue Lines (1991). Many still remember her hit “Ive Got You Under My Skin” from this era. In the 1990s, she reaffirmed her status as a global star with the hit song “7 Seconds”, sung with Youssou NDour, the most popular Senegalese musician of all time. Since then, Neneh has been a constant on stages all over the world, but it was her collaboration with her compatriot Mats Gustafsson and The Thing that first brought her to Slovenia.

Growing up in a musical environment and under the strong influence of the musical openness and innovative approaches of her father, her career-long success is characterised by creative approaches and the awareness of political realities and social issues. With her still current, original and inspiring music career, she aims to engage new generations and encourage older ones to follow in her footsteps. Meanwhile, sold-out shows all over the world prove she remains in excellent musical and performing shape. She is an artist who has imbued the history of pop music with freshness and continues nurturing it in a form that reflects the needs of future generations. Treat yourself to a winter music delicacy with Neneh Cherry.
