Swiss-Moroccan multi-instrumentalist and producer Sami Galbi has been an unmissable part of the Swiss alternative scene almost from the very beginning of his career. Based in the creative hotbed of Lausanne, he draws inspiration from parallel musical universes to create a sound all his own: North African raï and chaâbi melded with the electronic rhythms and textures that shaped his upbringing, including American hip-hop, house and Afro-Caribbean dance music. Using analogue machines, raw synth and electric guitar, Sami delivers high-energy stage performances that borrow eclectically from the codes of postmodern urban musics. All of this came together beautifully on last year’s album Ylh Bye Bye (Bongo Joe), which was accompanied by the superb video single ‘Dakchi Hani’.
He’ll be arriving in Ljubljana with his strongest live line-up, a trio featuring the exceptional singer and musician Inès Mouzoune (formerly of AMAMI and Baby Volcano, currently of Rôshani) and drummer/percussionist Yann Hünziker (Duo Sonor, Laure Betris, Zahnfleisch). And since Sami’s album was produced by AMMAR 808, who will be taking to the stage after Sami at this year’s festival, expect one or two surprises …
