Danyèl Waro (RE/AT) is the best-known proponent of maloya, the distinctive music and dance form native to L’Ile de la Réunion in the Indian Ocean. Maloya, whose rhythms derive from the song-making of enslaved workers on the island’s plantations, was once officially banned – and Waro is more than happy to keep its links with political justice alive.
What we have here, though, is a typically Druga Godba encounter: the poet of maloya versus Austria’s leading jazz trio. An evening of intrigue, lashings of artistic charisma and miles of inexhaustible energy awaits.
