An American singer-songwriter of Mexican and Salvadorean heritage whose star is most definitely in the ascendant. Her recent forays into electronic forms only highlight her huge vocal talent.

Angélica Garcia (US) is an American singer-songwriter of Mexican and Salvadorean heritage who first came to the world’s attention with ‘Jicama’, a song she performed for the NPR Tiny Desk series, and that featured prominently on the NY Times’ and Barack Obama’s year-end lists. Since then, she has made a fascinating move into electronic genres while keeping her Latin roots to the fore, particularly in her vocal performance.
This change of direction coincided with a move to New York, where she signed with Partisan – home to the great PJ Harvey, among others. ‘Y Grito’ and ‘El Que’, the first singles from her forthcoming album, immediately remind us of Sudan Archives’ DIY story and, musically, of La Chica. In some sense then, last year’s memorable closing concert will get a well-deserved encore.
