A Filetta (Corsica)

Of all the many vocal traditions found across the continent of Europe, Corsican polyphony is among the most beguiling. This is the festival’s second encounter with this astonishing technique, after Tavagna’s appearance in 1995. A Filetta are a seven-piece ensemble who have been around for 31 years, celebrating their 30th anniversary last year by releasing their 13th album. In this time they have collaborated with a host of musicians, directors and choreographers, including Paolo Fresu, Bruno Coulais and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. The thunderous voices of the seven singers wash over each other; rising, falling and rising again, they weave a powerful sound that envelops the everyday and the sublime with the same soft magic. It’s as if you’re listening to a single song of love itself.
