Tigran Hamasyan Trio (AM)

Tigran Hamasyan, piano; Marc Karapetian, bass; Arthur Hnatek, drums

Some of you must still remember this young Armenian pianist’s first appearance within the context of the Cankarjevi torki Series. That was in 2012, when he was only 25. We knew even then that his rise to prominence would be both swift and global.

Born in Gyumri, Armenia, Tigran grew up in a household that was full of music—his father was more of a rock fan and his uncle a huge jazz buff. Along the way, Tigran discovered the wide variety of Armenian music, including work songs, epic folk songs and war dances that are very different from region to region. While studying classical music in Armenia, Tigran continued to grow on his own as a jazz pianist. When he was 16, his parents moved to Los Angeles to give their two children (Tigran’s sister is a painter and sculptor) better artistic opportunities.

He is one of the most remarkable and distinctive jazz-meets-rock pianists of his generation. Tigran’s fresh sound is marked by an exploration of time signatures beyond 4/4 into 5/4 and 9/8, charged dynamics, the shifting between acoustic and electric modes of expression, all undergirded by an affinity to the grind of heavy metal. Tigran is an imaginative artist who freely and courageously pursues his own vision, not only built on tradition but also infused with his own personality and passion.

Hamasyan’s latest album, The Call Within, was released last year on the notable American Nonesuch Records. Imbued with rock and Armenian tradition, the album’s upbeat, eruptive music is marked by polyrhythms and brisk tempo in alternation with quiet, poetic, ethereal passages, like sonic and cinematic waves in constant flux.

The opening of the summer concert and festival season could not have been more exciting or inspiring.
