The story of the orchestra begins with the bold vision of Samba Diaite, a cultural entrepreneur and advocate for women’s rights and equal opportunity. Convinced that music can be a powerful driver of social change, he brought together a group of passionate, gifted, and determined musicians ready to challenge entrenched social norms. From this collaboration, Jigeen Ñi was born—the first Senegalese orchestra composed entirely of professional female musicians.

Khady Dieng, keyboards; Aissatou Dieng, drums; Ndeye Cissé, percussion (sabar, tamé); Evora Vaz, bass; Amina Sarr, vocals

The mission of Jigeen Ñi extends far beyond music. The ensemble sees artistic expression as a tool for social transformation, using its platform to promote awareness, gender equality, and active citizenship. Their performances carry messages of hope, respect, solidarity, peace, and love.

The musicians of the group also take part in the international music and visual performance Masks: The Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing, which will have its premiere on Saturday, 30 May 2026 at 19:00 at the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre.
