Druga Godba have been in love with Sutari ever since the group’s lovely performance at the Minorite Church in 2019, when the festival decamped to Maribor for the evening. We love their fusion of the traditional and the modern, their trancey shapings, and the polyphonic compositions they weave around themes of nature, freedom, femininity and sisterhood. Basia, Kasia and Dobromiła experiment with a variety of vocal techniques, create their own instruments and explore the musical potential of everyday objects; they also arrange traditional Polish songs and compose their own based on a variety of different female musical traditions.
Over the last dozen years or so, they have become the voice of Poland abroad, notching up performances in 22 countries in the process. In that time they have released four LPs and made countless friends, including Širom, on whose recommendation they first played in Slovenia six years ago. A joint appearance with two of Širom’s members, Ana Kravanja and Samo Kutin, therefore comes as no surprise. But knowing the huge imaginations and superb playing of these five musicians, we can safely say that this will be one of the highlights of the 41st edition of Druga Godba – and of Koroška’s spring musical offering as well, as this Polish-Slovenian train will make its first stop two days before in Ravne. Expect to hear things you’ve never come close to hearing before.
